Papers, 1843-1919.

These papers consist of letters, diaries, personal narratives, and printed memorabilia of the family of William N. and Lucretia Chadwick of Cohoes, New York, and their descendants. Most of the papers were created by three of their offspring: Peter Remsen, Joseph, and Anna Chadwick. Papers of Peter Remsen Chadwick include correspondence, 1853-1864, diaries, 1846-1886, and reminiscences of the Civil War, which altogether detail his lifetime activities and experiences. The reminiscences of the Civil War also provide many details related to the history of the 100th New York Regiment during the war. Similarly, Joseph Chadwick's correspondence relates primarily to his military service during the Civil War. He served in the Navy near Washington, D.C. and the Chesapeake Bay. Anna Chadwick's papers consist chiefly of correspondence with her immediate family regarding personal and family matters. She also received many letters from friends and relatives that offer many insights into the social life and customs of the mid-nineteenth century.
